Welcome to Kerian

Welcome to Kerian, Perak's smallest district, yet one of the richest in wildlife and other agricultural attractions. Smallest of  Perak's nine districts, Kerian occupies an area of just 958 sq,km. in northern Perak, bordered by Penang and Kedah. It constitutes only 4.6% of the total area of Perak, with about 150.000 people comprising mainly agricultural Folk, making up 7.9% of Perak's total population. Its landscape is almost all flat terrain and peat soil. with Bukit Merah, the highest point, rising it a mere 387 meters, in Gunung Semanggol. Kerian's most famous fresh water stretch is Tasik Bukit Merah, a huge lake you'll find enticingly attractive, renowned for its fish and of late for its more popular Lake Town Resort. ntroducing a fun-filled getaway that's got everyone talking. Of more economic importance is the tourist development recently developed which has given a new breath of life to this area. It boasts of having the only water theme park in Northern Malaysia, about one hour drive from Penang. In 1998 abut 400,000 visitors visited this area.You'll be amazed at the sight of almost endless rice fields, stretching to the horizon, because Kerian district is renowned as the oldest and biggest rice bowl area in Perak. The rice fields cover a total area of 23,700 hectares with a major part of the district's population involved in this vital agricultural activity. Oil palm is a next plantation crop that ranks next in importance, spreading over 16,700 hectares of land area. Kuala Gula           
Kuala Gula is know for its dry fish. Very little know for tourist. But years to come this unknown Village will be popular. The problem was the ferry crossing from Kuala Kurau to Kuala Gula. Sometime you have to wait for hours, Now things have change, Now they have built a bridge. Its about 40 mints drive from Penang.  Here there are chalets along the river side. Its built on the river, if you like fishing you can fish from the back door chalets. There  is a seafood restaurant., which offer all kinds of sea food, just name it you will get it. You can hire a boat to an island to watch Siberia birds. The best time is October - September. Here we also have some beautiful Chinese Temple and India Temples. For your information this temples are less know to the local people here.

The Famed Haven for Feathered Friends

If you're a bird lover, Kuala Gula' renowned bird sanctuary is definitely the destination for you. Over 160 species of exotic birds, some protected, have been spotted in this spectacular, scenic setting. One of these is the rare, endangered Milky Stork which you mustn't miss. This beautiful bird has made this haven its home. From September to December, there is a huge influx of thousands of birds of sorts from other continents, making it the ideal time for you to visit. This sanctuary is also home to a variety of land and sea mammals like the smooth otter, dusky leaf monkey, long-tailed macaque and ridge-backed dolphin. So keep a sharp look-out for these adorable co-habitants of  Kerian's heart-winning wildlife paradise.

Kerian District boasts the largest mangrove swamp area in the State of Perak. It harbors a variety of birds and animals the are unique to this region..
Pulau Kalumpang, an island located in the reputed to have the most picturesque mangrove swamp in the world. One famous species found in this area is the Burung Kuang, an attractive bird that nests in the lower branches of the mangrove trees. See this unique inhabitant in company with all its neighbors in another natural wonderland that only Kerian offers.
Plantation
Kerian District is full of Oil Palm Plantation and Paddy Fields. Mostly Indians worker in Plantation. And some places you see Toddy Plantation. Its local drinks (Toddy beer) and mostly drink by India from low and middle in come group. Its from coconut trees, I have taken most of foreigner over there and they really like the Toddy. Paddy fields are mostly Malay people involved.
Fishing Village
Most of the costal area are Fishing village. Places like Kuala Kurau, Kuala Gula, Tanjong Piandang and Kuala Bagan Tiang are the places where mostly Chinese fisherman live. The way of life is difference from the town people, They spend theirs free time in gambling and drinking toddy or beer. If you are a drinker you are welcome to meet this friendly guys. No beers no friends. If you are a guest, foods and beers are free. Very less people talk English and you may not have problem in communicate with them they use sign language. Night Markets
Night markets are famous in Malaysian and we have it Kuala Kurau, Tanjong Piandang and Parit Buntar, Once a week the market is on and difference town difference days, Its start at 5.00pm to 9.00pm.Here you can get all kinds of foods, that's Malay Food, Chinese Food and Indian Food. The price here very cheap and reasonable.
